Iansã: Goddess of the Winds, Keeper of the Storm

Updated: Jul 1, 2025

Iamsa Keeper of the Storm

The winds whisper her name. The storm dances at her feet. She is Iansã, Orixá of the winds, the keeper of transformation, the sovereign of the tempest. Her breath moves through the trees, wild and untamed, sweeping away what no longer serves. She is the force that clears stagnation, the fire that ignites within the storm, the liberator of souls.

Iansã is the sacred embodiment of the divine feminine in her fiercest, most untethered form. She is the mother of motion, the winds that stir revolution, and the force of nature that demands change. Her presence is a reckoning, a call to rise, to shed, to be reborn. Women who dance with Iansã know the power of surrender and the beauty of transformation. They know the freedom found in letting go.

Iansa and Xango

Iansa & her Consort Xango:

Mother of the Winds, Lady of Lightning and Storms, she embodies the fierce and untamed face of divine justice. She does not whisper, she roars. She does not merely cleanse, she transforms. Like the raging tempest, Iansã arrives in a flurry of wind and power, sweeping away the stagnant, the heavy, the shadowed remnants of all that no longer serves. She is the purifying force that clears the path between the soul and the divine, ensuring the sacred law flows unobstructed and untainted.

Her essence is bound to the mighty Xangô, the wielder of divine law & Orixa of Thunder, Lightning, Music & Dance. Her voice is the thunder that carries Xango’s decree. She is the herald of cosmic order, her lightning bolts igniting the heavens, illuminating the pathways of truth. The winds she commands carry sacred words, lifting them to the highest realms, purifying their meaning, and aligning them with the breath of the universe. She is fearless and boundless, moving with the swiftness of a storm, reaching the farthest corners of existence with her cleansing gales, making way for the consciousness of the sacred to rise.

Iansa Warrior Mother

Iansã is the Warrior Mother

Iansa is the fearless beacon of light who charges forward, undeterred by darkness. In the eye of the storm, where chaos swirls, she reveals only the brilliance of the crystal, the unwavering truth shining through the tempest. She teaches us that true power lies not in destruction, but in transformation, in the storm that dismantles illusions and leaves only clarity in its wake.

It is written in the book of the mysteries of the Orixás that Mother Iansã is the keeper of time's deepest secrets. She dances with the winds of change, moving between realms, navigating past, present, and future as one. She reminds us that time is not linea. It is a river, a current that can be shifted, redirected, purified. Those who call upon her name will find themselves in the heart of the storm, but they will emerge renewed, reborn, and forever aligned with the sacred flow of the cosmos.

Iansa Dance of the winds

The Sacred Dance and the Trance of the Wind

In the traditions of Umbanda and Candomblé, dance is a sacred invocation, a bridge between the earthly and the divine. Women who dance with  Iansã allow her spirit to flow through them, moving as the wind moves, their bodies becoming vessels of her force. This sacred dance is not merely an expression of devotion but an act of transformation. As they surrender to the rhythm of the drums and the force of the wind, they enter a trance state, an altered consciousness that allows Iansã and the sacred element of wind to move through them.

This trance is a learned skill, honed through devotion and practice, a means of aligning one’s soul with the sacred forces of nature. When the women dance, they are not only channeling Iansã’s energy but also harnessing the cleansing, sensual, and purifying qualities of the wind. Each movement is a shedding of old energies, a release of burdens, a healing that radiates through every fiber of their being.

Winds f transformation

Winds of Release and Transformation

In the traditions of Umbanda and Candomblé, Iansã is a warrior queen, yet she does not wield a sword of steel but a storm of divine will. She teaches women that strength is not always stillness. Sometimes, it is the wild rush of air, the violent release of all that was once held too tightly. To invoke Iansã is to call upon the force that clears and renews, to summon the storm that will cleanse the spirit.

The winds are sacred carriers, sweeping away pain, grief, and fear. When we call upon Iansã, we ask her to take our burdens, to strip away the veils that blind us, to awaken our inner tempest. She teaches that transformation is not a gentle process but a sacred shedding, a dance with the winds of destiny.

Iansa & Sexual Liberation

Iansã and Sensual Liberation

Wind is a sensual element. It caresses the skin, whispers against the flesh, and moves through the body in waves of pleasure and release. Iansã, as the embodiment of the wind, guides women to reclaim their sensuality, not as something given to others, but as a force that is theirs alone.

Her winds remind us of the sacred pleasure of touch, of movement, of breath. She calls us to dance in the storm, to let our bodies be kissed by the wind, to feel the rush of energy moving through us. Sensuality, under Iansã's guidance, is not mere seduction—it is power, it is presence, it is the divine feminine unleashed.

Iansa Path to ascension

The Storm as a Path to Ascension

The storm is feared because it cannot be controlled, yet within its eye lies a deep and potent peace. Iansã, as the mistress of the storm, teaches that spiritual ascension comes not from avoiding chaos, but from walking boldly through it. She guides women through the tempests of their own souls, showing us that within every storm is an opening to something greater.

She is the fierce protector of those who dare to transform, the guardian of souls who refuse to be bound. With her, we release, we rise, we remember. She calls women to claim their power, to shed all that no longer serves, to trust the wild winds of fate. She is the voice of the storm, the dance of the wind, the sacred fire that burns in the heart of the tempest.

journey with the elements

For those who feel the call to deepen their communion with the elemental forces, the Journey with the Elements workshop awaits.

This sacred container which takes place in our women’s temple space, is an initiation into the mysteries of the Orixás and their elements. Here, we invoke the spirits of nature, learning to embody their wisdom through movement, song, and devotion.

In this sacred container, we invite the Orixás to dance through us, allowing their energies to merge with our own as we enter trance states of divine ecstasy. We weave the sacred pontos (invocation songs) into our practice, calling forth their presence, honoring their guidance, and awakening the wisdom that lies dormant within.

Sacred Circle of Sisters

As we journey together, we cultivate a sisterhood of unconditional love, safety and support,

Join a circle of women who embrace the winds of transformation & understand that our own healing & liberation is connected with the healing & liberation of Mother Earth. The sacred dance of the Orixas is not only a movement practice - it is a prayer, a rite of passage. It offers protection, empowerment, and a path to ascension, guiding us ever deeper into the mysteries of the divine feminine.

Women who enroll in the Journey with the Elements workshop series will also have the opportunity to work intimately with all of the sacred elements and their corresponding Orixás.

Through these teachings, we learn to cultivate profound spiritual skills to aid in our healing, release all that no longer serves, and step fully into our divine power. This journey is a portal to awakening, a path to embracing one’s gifts and bringing them forth into the world, allowing each woman to fulfill her dreams and walk boldly in her higher purpose.

Join us in learning the ancient feminine art of harnessing the power of the elements and inviting the Nature Spirits to guide us on our path of ascension.

"The space Renee Boje holds in ceremony is incredible, her ability to connect to spirit and a safe space for women is profound. She is very intuitive which makes her a great space holder and able to tune into the energy in the room and feel where everyone is at is a gift.  Her connection to herbal medicine is so deep. She has definitely been a medicine carrier in other lifetimes. She is extremely  knowledgeable on how to assist women on their healing journey and is also a herbalist. If you have never taken any of her courses or workshops I would highly recommend you do and you will find out for yourself just how special she is"

Her talents are immeasurable and include, but are not limited to; effectively holding space, ceremony leadership, relationship coaching, esoteric and Occult teachings, massage, natural product manufacturing, community leadership, musical direction and the list goes on.

Under Renee's direction and guidance I have been able to heal many traumas from my past, as well as develop my own unique form of manifestation.

Renee has much knowledge that we may only dream of, and if you have the opportunity to learn from her, you should jump at the chance.

"Renee holds a very loving and safe space, in which I feel so seen, heard, and welcome by her angelic presence. Her abundance of knowledge and experience gained from her own studies, guides and her spiritual teachers is easily felt, and creates a sacred container full of hope, healing, and awakenings. The practices I have learned from being in her circle are ones I will take with me through my life, and the wisdom and acceptance I have recieved from her and the other women in the group has helped me set my heart free. Renee truly is a healer and a wonderful teacher, and I am honoured to be not only learning to heal myself, but how to hold a healing, safe and visionary space for others!"

We honor Paje Putanny Yawanawa in our Ceremonies....

Our Plant Spirit Medicine Society Founder & Ceremony Facilitator, Renee Boje, honours Putanny Yawanawa as her Spiritual Mother. Putanny, along with her sister, Hushahu were the first women to be recognized as shamans in the Yawanawa Tribe, located in the Brazilian Amazon. You may view videos of Putanny & Hushahu below.

Renee has a deep Love & Profound respect for the Yawanawa lineage, their Saitis (Sacred songs which carry a healing vibration) & traditions. She is devoted to building a Rainbow Bridge between the Sunshine Coast of BC & the Yawanawa Tribe in the Brazilian Amazon.

We sing Yawanawa Saitis  in most of our Plant Spirit Medicine Ceremonies & do a deep study of these Saitis in our Plant Priestess Initiation course. We also recite prayers in the Yawanawa language. Renee is devoted to preserving the sacred teachings of the Yawanawa lineage by sharing all she has learned and continues to learn in her studies with the Yawanawa tribe. Please feel welcome to listen to some of the Beautiful Saitis sung by Putanny Yawanawa in our gallery below.

Renee & the women of the Plant Spirit Medicine Temple are raising funds to bring Paje Putanny Yawanawa to Canada to hold Plant Spirit Medicine Ceremonies & Workshops for the women of our church here on the Sunshine Coast. Our Plant Spirit Medicine Temple also intends to bring a variety of Female Medicine Women here to hold workshops & ceremonies for our community.
